Effective Practices and Innovations for S-sTEM Student Success at Minority-Serving Institutions

Join us for a webinar hosted by the S-STEM Resource and Evaluation Center (REC) on April 6 from 3:00-4:00 p.m. ET. During the webinar, a panel of current S-STEM grant awardees at minority-serving institutions will share their insights and collectively explore topics related to evidence-based practices for engaging low-income students, and effective strategies for leveraging partnerships to enhance S-STEM scholars’ experiences. Following the panel presentations will be time for audience Q&A.

Panelists include:

  • Dr. Elizabeth Adams, Professor of Engineering and Technology, Cuesta College

  • Dr. Mohammed Qazi, Professor of Mathematics, Tuskegee University

  • Dr. Helen Turner, Vice President of Innovation, Chaminade University of Honolulu

The webinar will be facilitated by Dr. Mercy Mugo, Executive Director, QEM Network, and Dr. Simone Soso, Program Director, QEM Network.

Tips On Developing Your Research and Evaluation Plans for the 2023 NSF S-STEM Grant Proposal

The S-STEM Resource and Evaluation Center (REC) hosted a webinar on February 8 facilitated by Dr. Kavita Mittapalli, CEO, MN Associates, Inc. The webinar presented useful information on the S-STEM solicitation’s Generation of Knowledge (GoK) requirement, research plan requirement for Track 3 proposals, and evaluation plan requirement for proposals in all Tracks. It provided helpful tips on developing your S-STEM proposal research and evaluation plans, and included time for live Q&A.

2023 s-STEM Proposal Preparation Webinar series

The S-STEM Resource and Evaluation Center (REC) hosted a series of proposal preparation webinars during which NSF S-STEM program officers answered audience questions about the 2023 S-STEM solicitation and the proposal preparation process. In addition, AAAS S-STEM REC staff gave an overview of the assistance the REC will provide current and prospective S-STEM grantees, including evaluation plan support. Webinar participants were asked to watch the NSF narrated slide show prior to attending.

Additional Resources from an NSF-funded Workshop Series on Using Institutional Data to Inform Your NSF S-STEM Proposal
The virtual workshop series, held during December 2022-January 2023, shared guidance and practical strategies for gathering and using institutional data related to the analysis of the prospective scholar pool and scholar eligibility elements of the S-STEM proposal. The presenters were Amy Chan Hilton at the University of Southern Indiana and John Krupczak at Hope College, along with additional former NSF S-STEM Program Officers, experienced S-STEM PIs, and institutional data experts.

Reimagining S-STEM Project Assessment & Knowledge Generation: 2020 Lessons Learned & Future Implications

AAAS hosted a webinar on Tuesday, November 17th from 3:30 - 5:00 PM ET. This final webinar in the 2020 AAAS S-STEM Initiative series served as a platform to discuss changes and enhancements in project assessment and knowledge generation in light of challenges and barriers PIs and STEM Project Directors have encountered over the last six months such as COVID-19, social unrest and the spotlight on systematic inequities in higher education. The presenters were Dr. Kavita Mittapalli – lead evaluator of MN Associates, Inc. and NSF S-STEM project evaluator and Dr. Carol Cutler White, Assistant Professor of Education, Mississippi State University.

NSF S-STEM Program: Best Practices for Managing Covid-19 Effects on Student Learning and Motivation

AAAS hosted a webinar on Tuesday, September 29th from 4:00 - 5:30 PM ET. This webinar focused on best practices for mitigating the effects of COVID-19 on student learning. The presenters were Dr. Jennifer Drew, Senior Lecturer at the University of Florida, and Dr. Teresa Michelle Jones-Wilson, Professor and Department Chair at East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania.

AAAS hosted a webinar on Tuesday, July 21st from 2:30 - 4:00 PM ET. This webinar focused on best practices for building equitable STEM transfer pathways for community college students. The presenter was Dr. Xueli Wang, Professor, Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis, University of Wisconsin-Madison.

AAAS hosted a webinar on Friday, May 29th from 3:30 PM - 4:30 PM ET. This webinar focused on successful student recruiting methods for the S-STEM program at the University of Washington. The presenter was Dr. Eve Riskin, Associate Dean of Diversity and Access in the College of Engineering, Professor of Electrical & Computer Engineering and Faculty Director of the ADVANCE Center Institutional Change.
